FREQUENCY OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IN DIABETIC PATIENTS AT KHYBER TEACHING HOSPITAL KHYBER PUKHTUNKHWA (KPK) PESHAWAR

ABSTRACT

 

Background:Vitamin D deficiency is mostly common in Pakistani population. During this currentstudyfrequencyof vitamin D deficiency is evaluate among different gender and agecategory in Peshawar Pakistan. It is fat soluble and steroid hormone.It promotes theabsorptionof calcium and phosphorus.

Material and Methods:It is a cross sectional study and conducted at pathology laboratory Khyber teachinghospital Peshawar. All those patients were included in our study visited to Khyberteaching hospital.

Results:We excluded all those patients who are less than 20 year of age. A total of 93 adultpatient samples were collected. In the studied population out of 93 patients 64 patientswere vitamin D deficient, 18 samples were showed normal vitamin D and 11 samplesgives results of Vitamin D higher than normal. Out of 93 samples frequency ofdifferent age groups were 36 samples were of age between 20-40 year, 44 samples ofage ranging between 40-60 year 13 samples from 60-85 year, giving the finalfindings as 16% with normal vitamin D levels, 71.5% and 12.5% with low and highlevels respectively.

Conclusion:Vitamin D deficiency is more prevalent in diabetic patients in our region. Furtherstudies are required to be conducted in future in Peshawar region try to know theeetiological factors that causes vitamin D deficiency in this part of the world.
