Attitude of the Students towards People with Disability; A Cross-Sectional Survey

Abstract

Background: Dyability is life worst condition of population. Attitude of different people towards disable people are different in society.

Objective: To determine the attitude of the students of Northwest Institute of Health and Sciences towards disable people.

Methods: Research strategy for this study was across sectional survey in which Convenience sampling was used and Data was collected by using standard questionnaire. Data collection tool was IDP scale. Data was collected from all departments of Northwest Institute of Health sciences i-e; Department of Nursing, Department of Anesthesia, Department of Pathology, Department of Paramedics and Department of Physical Therapy. Sample size was 262 students.

Results: In this research total 262 students participated in which overall population of the students 115(43.9%) had positive attitude while rest of them 147(56.1%) had negative attitude towards the disability. Mostly Paramedics students shows positive attitude 70.6% and Physical therapy students shows second most positive response 56.6% and then pathology students shows 50.0% positive response and then Radiology students shows 44.1% response. The most negative attitude was shown by students of Nursing 93.9% then Anesthesia students shows second most negative attitude 83.9% then Radiology students shows 55.9% negative response and then pathology students shows 50.0% negative response respectively.

Conclusion:The conclusion of our study is that mostly half of the students’ shows negative attitude towards disable people and female students shows more negative attitude when compared to male students. So, the competent authorities should plan and implement certain strategies to cope with the negative attitude of the students towards the disable persons.
