PREVALANCE OF SHOULDER PAIN AND ITS IMPACT ON QUALITY OF LIFE AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN PERSONS WITH PARAPLEGIA IN PESHAWAR: A CROSSECTIONAL STUDY”

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE:Shoulder joint is a weight bearing joint in SCI patients they use shoulder musculature for the wheelchair propulsion and transfersactivities so in active wheelchair users it is supposed to cause shoulder pain. Consequently, in spinal cord injuredpopulation, shoulder pain has been found to have a high incidence of shoulder pain. Pain due to overuse of the shoulder joint affect value of SCI patient’s life.

METHODS:A cross sectional study was conducted on sample size of 109 participants. Shoulder pain and Disability index (SPADI) and quality of life (QOL) and community participation questionnaire (CIQ) was used.

RESULT:The findings of our study revealed that 51.99% paraplegic patients experience pain on SPADI while their quality of life according to WHOQOL(BREF) was also too low on bases of 4 domains and CIQ was scored as 7.6% out of 29.

CONCLUSION:This study suggest that shoulder pain is most common among SCI patients.People with SCI had low QOL and community participation in Pakistan. They need to strengthen shoulder muscles to decrease pain and improving the functional outcomes of SCI patients with shoulder pain.
