Background: Acute appendicitis is the inflammation of Appendix. If appendicitis were not detected on time maybe be life time complication can occur.
AIM: To find out the prevalence and risk factors of acute appendicitis in patients
presenting for abdominal ultrasound to Northwest general hospital (NWGH) Peshawar.
METHODS: This was Cross sectional study conducted in North west General Hospital
and Research center Peshawar during January to June 2019. Data were collected on a
self-administer Questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 22.
RESULTS: The present study was conducted among 100 patients. There was a 24.0%
prevalence of acute appendicitis. The incidence of acute appendicitis was more
common in male than in the female patients. 61.5% males and 38.5% females.The
majority a patient with acute appendicitis was under the age of 10-30 years.
CONCLUSIONS: In the current study clear differences in the frequencies of acute
appendicitis were noted for different genders, resident and age groups. Acute
Appendicitis rates were found to be higher in male gender than female. The prevalence
peaks in teen age group. Patients belong to rural area were more effected with acute
appendicitis than that of urban areas.
