Abstract of Study:
Background: Ultrasound used sound waves to take the image of internal organ. It is non invasive and first choice of modality for many areas. For that in our study we take ultrasound for the detection of cholelithiasis.
Aim: To determine the frequency and associated risk factors of gallstones during ultrasonography of abdomen.
Methods: This was descriptive cross sectional study conducted in Northwest General Hospital and Research center Peshawar during February to July 2019. Data were collected on a self-administer data collection form and analyzed using SPSS version 22.
Results: In our study, there were 368 patients having 183 (49.7%) males and 185 (50.3%) females. The overall ratio of detected patients who were diagnosed with cholelithiasis was 35 (9.5%). The frequency of cholelithiasis was more common in female than in the male patients. 51.4% females and 48.6% males. The most cholelithiasis patients are between the ages of 37-56 years. The tendency of cholelithiasis is higher in married patients (31.8%) compared to unmarried patients. Major risk factors of cholelithiasis are physical inactivity (17.3%), weight loss (14.5%), family history (13.6%) and diabetes Mellitus (10.9%). Obesity (6.4%), smoking (2.7%), liver disease (1.8%) and contraceptive pills (0.9%) also little contribution in cholelithiasis.
Conclusions: According to our study, the frequency of cholelithiasis is higher in female than male. Major risk factors are physical inactivity, marital status, weight loss, family history and diabetes mellitus. Moreover, risk factors include obesity, smoking, liver disease and use of contraceptive pills also contributing in cholelithiasis occurrence.
