Background: Amputation is a dramatic event that brings a marked change in an individual life due to this change person can face physical and psychological affect which can influence the quality of life.
Objective: To Determine the frequency of low back pain in a patient with lower limb amputation and how it affects their function and health-related quality of life across the three level of lower limb amputation.
Methods: A cross-sectional study with nonprobability sampling technique was planned. Data was collected from 264 amputation patients from PIPOS Centre Peshawar. The Roland-Morris questionnaire was used to assess LBP disability and The Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) was used for quality of life. The duration for this study was 6 months.
Results: A total number of 264 amputee’s patients with the frequency of male 219(83%) and female 45(17%) with a mean age of (40.38). There was significant association between pre and post amputation back pain with (P< 0.05). There was statistical difference between disability and low back pain with (p<0.05). A statistical difference was found between low back pain and all domains of quality of life except mental and physical health with (P< 0.05) while no association was found between LBP and across the three level of amputation (P> 0.05).
Conclusion: This study found that LBP was prevalent after amputation. There was significant association of low back pain before and after amputation while no significant association was found in low back pain and across the three level of amputation. The effect of low back pain on disability was found statistically significant and effect of low back pain on quality of life was significant on some domains like Physical function, social function, vitality energy, pain and general health.
