Abstract of Study:
Background:Fluorsocopy is a radiological modality in which a video images is taken along the procedure is performed. Barium sulphate is the contrast used in the procedures of Fluorocsopy. This study is performed to find out the adverse effects associated with the respective contrast given during the procedure.
Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of side effects of the barium sulphate in patients who undergoes fluoroscopy examination in Northwest General Hospital.
Materials and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in NWGH Peshawar during March to August 2020. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results: From the study over a period (6 months) a total number of 51 patients and the mean age were 38.18 presented for Barium examinations. In 51 patients 28 (54.9%) patients were male and 23 (45.1%) patients were female who were present at fluoroscopy department at NWGH Peshawar. Out of 51 patients mild side effects are 40(78.4%), moderate side effects are 17 (33.3%), and no severe side effects were reported. While mild most common side effects was confusion 37(72.5%), nausea 25 (49.0%), pain in abdomen 15 (29.4%), vomiting 8 (15.7%) diarrhea 5 (9.8%) and constipation 5 (9.8%).Moderate side effects were17(33.3%), while most common side effects was difficulty in breathing 11(21.6%), tightness of chest 9 (17.6%)
Conclusion: Side effects of Barium Sulphate are common, although mild side effects of occur, however severe side effects are rare.
