BACKGROUND
Nowadays health and wellbeing of a person has captivated people all over the world and now is gaining popularity in Public Health Sectors. Wellness is not merely the absence of disease, but the ability to become aware of, and make selections of lifestyles in agreement to the work situations .This is made possible by various dimensions of wellness wheel that includes: Physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, financial, and occupational aspects. Despite having easy access to healthcare facilities, medical students are often reluctant to seek help for mental health concerns. This study is an unfamiliar concept in medical students as most of our students are unaware of emotional well-being.
Objectives:
a. To assess the effects of social interdependence on emotional well-being of medical students.
b. To determine the predictors which are related to social interdependence and emotional well-being
METHODOLOGY:
This was a cross sectional study which included 282 students from 4 medical colleges of Peshawar, 120 from KMC , 54 from KGMC , 54 from PIMS and 54 from NWSM . Multistage sampling and Simple random sampling was done and data was collected .Questionnaire using Likert scale was used containing 21 questions was used to measure social and emotional wellbeing of students. Response was indicated by giving four points to each question.
RESULTS;
There was significant difference in emotional wellbeing in association with age(p value0.029) .There was no difference in emotional wellbeing in association with gender(P value 0.282). There was no difference in emotional wellbeing in association with year of study(0.424).There was no difference in emotional wellbeing in association with being hostelite or day scholar(0.665). There was no difference in emotional wellbeing in association with mother’s occupation and father’s occupation ( p value 0.315 and 0.127) .There was no difference in emotional wellbeing in association with private or public college ( p value 0.603).
CONCLUSION;
From the above results we conclude that there is no difference in emotional wellbeing of medical students based on gender, year of study, being hostelite or day scholar, being public or private students, having rural or urban residence, occupation of mother and occupation of father whereas there is difference based on age and significant difference based on social wellbeing .Considering the significance of social and emotional wellbeing in medical field it is already known that emotional and social wellbeing is a part of doctor-patient relationship. Different activities should be done and added to medical curriculum to enhance their social and emotional wellbeing scores.
