Incidence of Failed Spinal Anesthesia In Urology Patients Undergoing Surgical Procedures” at Northwest General Hospital, Peshawar

Abstract

Background

Spinal anesthesia is the most frequently applied anesthesia procedure. However, the Spinal anesthesia failure rate varies between 1 and 17%.

 

Aims:

This study aims to find out the Incidence of failed spinal anesthesia in urology patients undergoing surgical procedures at North West General Hospital and Research Center Peshawar

 

Material and Methods.

The study design was a cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample size of this study was 45. The sampling technique was a nonprobability convenient sampling technique. Patients of both gender males and female age ranging from 35 to 80 years were included. Only patients having (American Society of Anesthesiology) ASA grade 1 and grade 2 with elective surgeries of urology under spinal anesthesia were included in this study. Patients with emergency urology surgeries or patients having vertebral abnormalities like scoliosis, lordosis, kyphosis, or trauma to the vertebral column were also excluded from this study,

 

Results:

Our study shows a 0% failure rate of spinal anesthesia with follow standard protocol and overcoming technical errors.

 

Conclusion:

From our study, we conclude that Identifying the avoidable cause of inadequate spinal block can help to minimize the incidence of failure. Following standard protocol for spinal anesthesia under the observation of experienced anesthesiologists technical factors which contribute to failure could be control
