Internet Addiction and Its Relationship with Depression and Academic Performance: A Cross-Sectional Study at a Medical School in Pakistan

ABSTRACT
Background The prevalence of diabetes mellitus with its complications is increasing worldwide. The awareness of knowledge of diabetes, its complications and risk factors are important in community so that steps can be taken for its prevention.
Methods: A cross sectional survey was carried out among 100 individuals who visited the outpatient department of Khyber teaching hospital and northwest general hospital Peshawar Pakistan. Convenience sampling was used to formulate study population. A elose ended questionnaire was used for data collection and result were then analyzed and presented using computer software statistical package for social science (SPSS) for windows, version 16 on the basis of this information, conclusion was drawn, and recommendation were made.
RESULTS: in our study total 100 patients were included with 41(41%) males and 59(59%) females. Their ages ranged from 25 to 80 years with mean age of 54.14(S. ID 13.558) years. the mean duration of diabetes mellitus was 10.88 (S. D 6.838) years. Regarding complications 52.0% had poor knowledge 48.0% had a good level of knowledge. There was no significant difference in level of knowledge regarding diabetic complications among male and female (p-value 177), private and govt sector hospitals (p-value 423), rural and urban area (p-value 168) whereas there was significant difference in different levels of qualifications (p-value 000). Similarly. about risk factors 58% had bad knowledge 42% had good knowledge. There was no significant difference in level of knowledge regarding diabetic risk factors among male and female (p-value 748), private and govt sector hospitals (p-value 685), rural and urban area (p-value 746) whereas there was significant difference in different levels of qualifications
(p-value 0,00).

Conclusion: On the basis of above results we came to the conclusion that some factors play an important role in the level of knowledge regarding complications and risk factors of which education is a most significant factor, male also have slightly better knowledge than females. Overall, most of the patients are unaware of diabetic complications and risk factors. Therefore, community and hospital-based awareness programs should be launched to improve the level of knowledge towards complications and risk factors.
