Background
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic illnesses characterized by high blood glucose levels over a prolonged period. HBV cause hepatitis B in hepatocyte cell and increase risk of developing liver failure, cirrhosis or cancer and cover a possible risk factor for the development of DM. The replication of HBV in extra hepatic sites, such as the pancreas, is responsible for f-cell damage and may ultimately lead to diabetes. Signs and symptoms are dark color urine, fatigue weakness, nausea, vomiting and whiteness of eyes.
Material and method: A cross sectional study was conducted during the form February to July 2019 in NWGH and RC a total of 121 HBV positive and diabetic sample were collected to find out prevalence of diabetes in HBV infection.
Result: Total of 121(100%) HBV positive samples were analyzed, 99(820) were males and22(189%) were females. 15(12%) patients were diabetic out of 121(100%) and 106(87)patients were non diabetic. Out of total 15 diabetic patients 13(10.4%) diabetic patients were male and 2(1.6%) were female diabetic patients.
Conclusion: We concluded that the prevalence of diabetes in hepatitis b virus infected patient at Northwest General Hospital, Peshawar is higher in males than females. The present study shows that patients with HBV infection are at higher risk of developing DM compared with uninfected patients and that HBV infection may be a potential risk factor for DM development.
