Post Operative Sore Throat Following General Surgery Procedures Under General Anesthesia At Mardan Medical Complex Mardan

Abstract

Background

Sore throat is a common complication in general surgical procedures following general esthesia with an endotracheal tube (ETT). Many studies show that laryngeal mask airways (LMA) may reduce the incidence of postoperative sore throat.

Objectives

to conduct a study to desmine the occurrence of postoperative sore throat following general surgery procedures

Methods;

in this perspective, observational study patients having general surgery under general anesthesia were interviewed postoperatively for the determination of the sore throat. Information was collected according to our demographic data which were the size of ETT and LMA, surgical and anesthetic duration. The study was conducted for 6 months

Results:

295 patients were interviewed postoperatively. 115 (18.916) patients suffered from sere threads. The results show that female gender, older age, prolonged surgical procedures, and larger size of ETT are more dominating risk factors for developing sore throat postoperatively

Conclusion;

awareness of the factors responsible for developing sore throat postoperatively, Skillful management of the airway, and using a compatible supraglottic airway device like proseal LMA instead of ETT can reduce the incidence of postoperative sore throat

Aim of Study

In recent years many studies have been performed to determine the incidence of

postoperative sore throat and to find measures for its prevention Most of these studies have been conducted on the western population. The presence of racial differences in the incidence of postoperative complications has been well documented
