Frequency of knee osteoarthiritis in young patients visiting X-ray department of a tertiary care Hospital

Background: The knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common arthritis for which patients visit to hospital. Literature review shows that younger athletes have high risk of knee osteoarthritis when they have any kind of sports related injuries.

Objective: To find out the frequency of knee osteoarthritis in young patients at NWGH Peshawar.

Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in NWGH. The sample size was 317 but we included only that young patient who had OA.Which is 53, calculated by RaoSoft Calculator. The study was conducted during June-September 2021. Data were collected from patients coming to the radiology department for knee joint X-ray and analyzed by SPSS version 21.

Results: There were 317 knee x-rays performed we included only that patient who had OA and there were only 53 young patients reported out of these 21(39.6%) were male and remaining 32 (60.4%) patients were female and there male and female ratio was 2:3.The age of participants ranges from 15-35 and was characterized into four groups. The age group of 26-30 had highest rate of osteoarthritis while age of 30-35 had the lowest rate of KOA. Out of overall patients 16.7% osteoarthritis, 49.1% joint space narrowing, 28.3% knee spiking and 32.1% had osteophytes was recorded.

Conclusion:
This population based study shows that the frequency causing knee OA in previous four months in patients at NWGH Peshawar. Females were more affected as compared to male and people with 26-30 ages were at increased risk of experiencing knee osteoarthritis. Out of overall patients 16.7% having osteoarthritis   49.1% joint space narrowing 28.3% knee spiking and     32.1% had     osteophytes     was      recorded.
