ABSTRACT
Background: Strabismus is a visual problem which may lead to a failure to develop binocular vision, and amblyopic, either of which may prevent an individual from pursuing certain occupation. The appearance of ocular misalignment may interfere with social and psychological development with potentially serious effects for all patients with strabismus.
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of surgical correction of noticeable strabismus on psychosocial parameters in teenagers and adults with a history of childhood-onset strabismus
Study Design: Study design was descriptive cross sectional under the domain of health system research.
Study Setting: Eye OPD, Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar.
Participants: Teenagers and adults above 15 years.
Study Period: January 2020 to August 2020.
Sample Size: 50 teenagers and adults, including 31 males and 19 females.
Results: The mean age was 30.8 years (range from 15-70 years). According to their type of deviation, participants were divided into two groups (isotropic and exotropic). They were observed that 30 patients (60%) had esotropia, in which 18 patients (36%) were male and 12 patients (24%) were female. And out of 50 patients 16 patients (32%) had exotropia, in which 11 patients (22%) were male and 5 patients (10%) were female. The majority of patients reported that surgery improved their self-esteem (80%). Moreover, 50 patients responded surgery improved their confidence to meet new people (76%), better relationship with others, and also job performance too.
Conclusions: Strabismus patients suffered from psychosocial and functional distress. Early referral to strabismologists is important. Strabismus is a treatable disease. Corrective surgery for strabismus is safe and Cost-effective and can restore ocular alignment, alleviate the functional disability and improve the patient’s psychosocial webeing.
