BACKGROUND: Radiology staffs need proper knowledge of radiation protection so that they could justify exposing the patients and themselves and thus have to practice proper measure of protection against radiation. The present study aims to determine knowledge and practices of allied health staff of radiology department towards radiation protection.
Methods: This was cross sectional study conducted in two selected private tertiary care hospitals Peshawar during January to June 2018.Data was collected on a self administer questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20.
RESULTS: Out of 90 listed (sampled) subjects 75 completed the questionnaire and return which accounted 83.3% of response rate. Knowledge about ALARA principles, 63(84) % believe that they have enough knowledge in this regards. Majority 69(92.0%) reported that they do know about radiation protection equipment, 67(89.3) %were agree that time, distance and shielding are the cardinal principle of radiation protection. Similarly 60(80)% were of the view that a well setting of KVP, MAS, minimize the receiving dose from radiation for both radiation workers and patients wearing apron 72 (96.0%) of staff reported that they use protective apron to patient for safety tool, however, only 51(68%)of them have attended seminars or got training in this regards.
Similarly 69(92%) have used film badge, while only 52(69%) used to take consent form from pregnant patients or their attendant before the procedure.
Conclusiion: Awareness about adverse impact was highly acknowledged and general precautionary measures were practiced, however proper knowledge and practices are needed to be updated.
